Welcome ...

Welcome to my website.

SarlitoHi. This is Sarlito Sarwono. My fullname is Sarlito Wirawan Sarwono. My name is probably too complicated for those who are not used to Indonesian names. However, my friends and my students just call me, "Ito"   or   "mas (brother) Ito".

Sarlito.hyperphp.com is a website that provides you any information about Sarlito. I hope this site will be informative to you. It is not only about the "who's who" of me, but also more importantly, about my perspective on my social environment around me, my family, my community, my nation, my country, my world! In other words, this web is about my way of thinking.

It might be not the best web you've ever seen, but this is about me and this is the best web I have ever had (thanks to my friend, Juneman, who designed this web). I really hope that you will know me better after browsing through my web.

Some people call me as one of the top psychologists in Indonesia. Some of the people feel that I can be classified as a celebrity. And of course my students and my colleagues will see me as an academician, a scientist, a researcher, a columnist or a professor. However, beyond all those predicates, I am just an ordinary person, just like you and any other people.

As an ordinary person, I love my family most, particularly my grand daughter, Audria (born in 2000). My wife (Sri Pratiwi, her friends call her "Pripit" and I call her "Jeng Sri") used to work at the same faculty as I work in, which is the Faculty of Psychology, University of Indonesia, although is not a psychologist (she started her career as a librarian and when retired she was the general manager of the faculty). My eldest son Anto or Untung (born in 1969) as his friends call him, is a graphic designer. My daughter Anti or Astrid (born in 1971), the mother of Audria is a psychologist. My youngest son, Dimas (born in 1980) is a lawyer. Anto and Anti were not very lucky with their marriages, but Dimas and his wife, Chida are now (when I type this in the year 2008) studying in the Netherlands for their second degree, while expecting their baby.

I don't do many sports except swimming and cycling, but I used to play basketball and volleyball and karate when I was a student and tennis at the later age. The doctors asked me to stop playing basketball or tennis few years ago when they found that my left leg is no longer strong enough for sport. However I still play some musical instruments. I started with piano when I was a little boy and later on I moved to guitar and key board when I was in my high school and university years and few months ago, I started to play the saxophone. I like almost all kinds of music, particularly pop music. When I was typing this column, I was also watching Michael Jackson's show on TV. I also like jazz and classical music, and even keroncong  and Javanese  gamelan. I also sing some songs, although I don't think my voice is as beautiful as Bob Tutupoly, but who cares...?

I also read a lot. I read in my study, in a waiting room, on a restaurant table, in a plane and even in the toilet. But I don't read on my bed (I sleep very easily) nor in moving cars (I feel dizzy). I read almost any kind of printed-paper: newspaper, magazines, journals, books, and of any content: psychology (of course), news, politics, economics, culture, arts, National Geographic, and even novels and fictions, as long as they are written in the Bahasa Indonesia or English. I speak Dutch a little bit, but my Dutch is not good enough to read complicated Dutch reading materials. I speak Javanese very well, but obviously almost there is none Javanese reading materials available nowadays.

Last but not least, among so many jobs I have ever done, I like my private practice most. Whenever I am in town, I still do my practice in clinical psychology twice a week: one day in a hospital and one day in my own private psychological bureau "Dr. Sarlito & Associates". I feel that by helping people to cope with their problems I can learn how to cope with my own problems. That is why I provide "Online Consultation" in this website. Please feel free to ask your questions, because it is free of charge too.

By the way, currently (January-July 2008) I am serving as a visiting Professor at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

All right folks, have a nice journey through my website ... and don't forget to write down your comments and criticisms.
